The Weekender Cocktail: The Hurricane

So now that we’ve kicked off our blog, how about a cocktail? When we’re at home, Saturday night has become our night for cocktails, grilling, and catching up. I’ll post one of these towards the beginning of the week to have time to gather the mixers…

We live near the Texas Gulf Coast, and June 1 marks the beginning of Hurricane Season. While we hope for a quiet year (we didn’t get flooded out during Harvey but a whole bunch of our friends did), truth is anytime of the year is in season for this kind of hurricane.

As the story goes, the legendary Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans created this drink because they were forced to stock a lot of rum. While it may have been born out of necessity, it’s good to drink because it’s refreshing and delicious.

While today Pat O’s sells a powdered mix where you just add rum, the ones I’ve made at home with the mix taste nothing like the ones I’ve had on Bourbon Street. It’s worth the effort to make a proper hurricane.

One issue you will probably run into is finding passion fruit juice, unless you’re fortunate enough to be reading this in the Caribbean. I’m not able to run down to the grocery store to either find a couple of passion fruits to juice or to buy a bottle of juice. You can find passion fruit juice concentrate on Amazon (look for Da Fruta or Maguary’s). The other option is to by a passion fruit drink mix, either on Amazon or in the mixer aisle at the liquor store. My pick is Master of Mixes Passion Fruit Drink Mix. I find it easier to go with the mixer than it is to deal with the juice concentrate.

With that, grab your jigger and shaker and let’s go!


2 oz rum (light; I use Don De Barrelito dos estrellas)
2 oz rum (dark; I use Meyers Dark Rum
2 oz passion fruit juice
1 oz orange juice
1/2 lime
1 tablespoon simple syrup
1 tablespoon grenadine

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and squeeze the juice of half of a lime. Pour the remaining ingredients into the shaker; shake well. Strain into a hurricane glass and top with an orange wedge and a maraschino cherry if you’re feeling fancy.
