The Weekender Cocktail: Top Shelf-ish Margarita

It’s easy to make a top shelf drink: just spend a lot of money on booze and pour it.

But you can make a damn good Margarita reaching for the middle of the shelf and have no regrets.

I won’t like, I like the good stuff. I also like a good deal. Our local liquor store will feature some lesser known brands that score well with the critics but come in at a better price. So I took a top shelf Margarita recipe:

1 1/2 oz resposado tequila
1 oz Grand Marnier orange liqueur
3/4 oz fresh lime juice

and turned it into something more Top Shelf-ish:

1 1/2 oz Don Sergio Resposado tequila
1 oz Le Roi des Oranges liqueur
3/4 oz fresh lime juice

I find Don Sergio to be a damn good tequila for under $30. Le Roi des Oranges? It’s honestly not as good as the Grand Marnier, but unlike the average triple sec, this has proper orange aroma and flavor for under $20. Mixed all together it makes a fine Top Shelf-ish Margarita.

Either way, combine in a shaker with ice, pour into a glass, and enjoy!
